the sunrise, the sunset and the weather conditions

the sunrise, the sunset
and
the weather conditions

I'm thinking about the many other ways in which time can be measured. Before the advent of clocks, we must have depended on the position of the sun, the movement of tides, the state of leaves on a tree etc to know what time of the day it is. But there are other ways to know how much of a day has passed. For example, if you wake up to the sound of the nearby azaan, it's probably 5 am. If you decide to focus on a task between one azaan to the next, it means you were immersed in the task for 4-8 hours. The azaan could be a reminder to hydrate or grab a snack (if you're not fasting). In the evening, the azaan tends to coincide with the birds going back home, a phenomenon that gently nudges you to wind down and prepare for the night.

As writers, we come up with many other ways to keep ourselves focussed on the task ahead. Once the sun sets, you could light a fresh candle in a quiet place, and write for the duration of time that the candle burns. If you have a baby at home, you could write for the duration of time that the baby is napping.

What other creative ways of measuring duration of time can you think of? Time to ask yourself #whatif. #ifihadnowatch #YourQuoteAndMine
