It was late evening. I was reading a racy thriller and only a few pages were left when the power supply suddenly went off. Shucks! Abusing the electricity department under my breath, I stood near my window lost in thoughts.

I sensed a shadowy figure moving stealthily in the balcony of the neighbouring house and heard a soft slippery sound. My head and ears perked up as my mind registered a female presence. The bedroom window of the house faced my smaller bedroom window and I immediately dashed off to my bedroom window. I could see a scuffle happening..two figures grappling and then a hand with a knife lifted itself and cut the other's throat. I stood frozen and did not notice my husband kumar who had also heard the sound and was standing behind me watching all that I had just seen. He pulled me to him and clamped my mouth shut. I passed out.

I opened my eyes to the mobile light filtering my eyes and my detective husband Kumar's concerned face looking at me. The events that had just transpired flashed before me and I was sobbing uncontrollably. Kumar left me and ran off to the neighbouring house even as the police siren sounded and cops could be seen getting in. I knew the next door guy very well. He was a captain in the Indian Navy and had a steady girlfriend. Did she kill him? She was an upcoming model and seemed intelligent and sensible. Was there another girl? Stupid and meaningless thoughts floated in my mind. After what seemed like aeons, kumar returned. We had to leave for the police station. Our statements were to be recorded. We were made to wait before we were called upon to give our statements. By the time we returned home it was almost morning. I did not see the dead body.
