He was the son of Akbar Shah II and succeeded his father as the ruler of the Mughal Empire in 1837. On October 7, 1858, he was deposed, and the Mughal Empire was officially abolished. Zafar was exiled to Rangoon (present-day Yangon) in Burma (present-day Myanmar), where he lived in relative obscurity and poverty until his death on November 7, 1862.
