Recap... Zoi, an albatross chick bird, along with other albatross chicks, are left alone on Layson Island by their parents and now face the most challenging phase of their lives if they have to survive—their maiden flight into the ocean. Unaware of tiger sharks waiting below for a feast, a black-footed albatross lifts off into the sea, only to splash land in the waters, waiting for the wind to propel its take-off. Zoi (Part 8) All the other young ones on the beach, including Zoi, look at him sitting on the water. Others get motivated, and one by one, they follow suit and are airborne for their maiden flight. Zoi also tries and unsuccessfully lands back at the beach. The first young Albatross is still gearing for its next takeoff and waits for the wind to provide the necessary lift. However, the tiger shark lurking behind appears uninterested in waiting and pounces on the young one, which tries desperately to escape the shark's sharp jaws by frantically flapping its wings and quacking out at the top of its voice as if calling out for its parents, who are thousands of kilometres away over the Pacific Ocean, unaware that its young one is struggling between life and death with little chance of survival. Zoi stares at the attack and helplessly watches the young Albatross completely being sucked into the jaw of the tiger shark! Zoi quacks and walks a couple of steps here and there. Other young ones, too, quack and look confused. They all get rooted to their spots as they watch the tiger sharks mercilessly kill their companions one by one. However, very few young ones successfully pull themselves out of the dreadful jaws of the sharks before flying far above the ocean to live just like their parents. But yes, to get here, all these young ones must overcome the dangerous barriers of tiger sharks! If Zoi had to live his life, he would have no other choice but to fly into the ocean. But it's a world of survival, and the waters, which looked calm so far, aren't any more. Zoi ( Part 6) Summer in North Artic now faces the sun, baked in daylight, melting the ice-covered ocean. To survive in this transitioning world, life must move with it. The temperature in the North Pacific reaches its peak, and the predators in the ocean sense this change to set a new course. A tiger shark is on a 1000-kilometer journey across the Pacific. Guided by the Earth's magnetic field, she swims straight towards her target, Laysan Island, north of Hawaii. As she gets close to Laysan Island, we know she is not alone. Numerous tiger sharks have joined her. This species makes some of the longest journeys of all sharks and hunts a wider variety of animals, including birds! Now, in the Layson Islands, Zoi and other young ones are waiting for the wind to give them the lift for their maiden takeoff. These Albatross birds initially take off when the wind speed is high, and as the wind ceases, they tend to rest in the seawater before they can take off again. His father did fondle him but soon left him again alone before flying out to a life of travelling the Pacific Ocean, mostly never to return. Zoi (Part 5) Now, if Zoi has to live his life, he is left with no option but to fly. His parents wouldn't revisit him to feed or fondle him; the ocean was his only hope. But, like all Albatross young ones, he will have to wait for a strong wind to come, giving him the required push for his maiden flight. In a few weeks, the wind will arrive, and Zoi and others will debut as one of the greatest ocean travellers. But even if the right wind comes, it may bring its own dangers. Nothing is easy. Life has already pushed Zoi and his fellow chicks to a corner, with no other way out except one, and to exit that way, he has to put his life at risk. All the parent Albatross arrive on Laysan Island to breed. Their duties end once the young ones are able to fly and live their own lives. They then leave their young ones on the Island. Zoi ( Part 4 ) Zoi, the albatross bird chick, has been waiting on Laysan Island for weeks for its parents to arrive with some food. Other chicks, whose parents had arrived, were fortunate enough to receive food. But patiently, Zoi waits for his parents. Zoi is seen waiting on the Laysan beach, braving the weather for another three weeks, and finally, quacking in excitement, looking at the horizon. One of its parents appears from the horizon and, within minutes, lands on the Island close to Zoi. It seems like Zoi's father has arrived. Having spent their lives so long apart, they must renew their bond before feeding. The father albatross then begins to feed our starving Zoi. Its paradise found for Zoi. But the saddest part is far from over; it is said that this could be the last meal Zoi has ever been fed, and it almost certainly contains plastic. Zoi begins to chirp and quack in happiness, wanting to have food and meet his dear father after a long time. They look at each other, and the father fondles Zoi for some time. But this beautiful moment is short-lived for Zoi. The father quacks for some time, slowly turns away from Zoi, and begins to walk in the opposite direction towards the waters before flying out to a life of travelling the Pacific Ocean, mostly never returning. Zoi looks at his dear father, disappearing into the horizon. His sad feelings are heard as a couple of quacks as he tries to bear this separation. If only he had known that meeting his parents again might not be on the cards of his destiny. Zoi is left alone to its fate, like all other lonely Albatross chicks on Layson Island, who have to make a quick decision to proceed with their maiden flight to overcome the uncertainty ahead. The plastic has indeed reached Zoi's stomach, and he, too, begins to choke! He could throw up all the hard-to-digest parts like squid, beaks, and bones, but ejecting plastic was more challenging. I recently watched a documentary about one of nature's survival stories. I was impressed by the concept, narration and facts, not to mention the incredible videography. This sparked my desire to write about this documentary. After writing it, I decided to share it. These bizarre but true ways of nature will never cease to amaze those who long to know more about the animal kingdom and are fascinated by nature and its uniqueness. At the end of this article, I have mentioned the details of the documentary. I named this article "ZOI," which means life in Greek. ZOI ( PART 1) A remote speck of land lies 1600 km northwest of Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean. An island called Laysan. Laysan is home to one of the world's largest seabirds, 'The Layson Albatross'. The Laysan Albatross can glide over the open ocean for hours without a single flap of its long, narrow wings, cruising hundreds of miles daily on an impressive six-foot span. These birds are long-distance travellers, flying millions of kilometres in their 60-year lives. This albatross species is named for the Laysan breeding colony in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. It is one of the most common seabirds in this remote area of the world, and pairs mate for life. It forages while floating on the ocean's surface, feeding mainly on small squid, fish, and crustaceans. A six-week-old white albatross stands alone, along with other chicks, spread across the vast sandy beach. Clinging to its dear life, the albatross looks far into the horizon. This documentary mainly focuses on this particular young white Albatross. I named it ZOI (the Greek word for life). This documentary is all about survival right from birth. Zoi looks around and quacks. Presently, it's not yet ready to fly. Its eyes wander around, looking for a ray of hope, like all other young chicks looking far into the horizon. All the young chicks, including Zoi, eagerly wait for their parents to fly back from the horizon with food. But these parents could be fishing up to 3000 km away in the vast ocean. So, the chicks, including our Zoi, must, in all probability, wait for many nights and days at the open beach, some days drenching in the pouring rain, swaying with the blasting winds, and other days heating up in the scorching sun. Every bird appearing on the horizon brings hope to these chicks. Zoi continues to gaze into the ocean, braving the rain, wind, and heat.
