His family moved to India when he was young, and he grew up in Kolkata (then Calcutta). Azad was deeply influenced by the nationalist movement in India from an early age. He joined the Indian independence struggle and became a prominent member of the Indian National Congress. As the first Minister of Education in independent India, he laid the foundation for the establishment of numerous institutions of higher learning, including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the University Grants Commission (UGC). In 1958, Azad was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor, in recognition of his contributions to the nation. He continued to be a respected voice in Indian politics and education until his death on February 22, 1958.
