Stop with the tears, my dear; Cease the heaving, grovelling sighs And endless snivelling, I hear. Let go of the ancient memories And dry those eyes in tears. You knew that this wasn't easy; You deemed the ghastly deluge Of all that's abysmal and queasy; Yet, you chose to relent; You opted to go through it, still. So, permit us both some slumber; Allow us both some breathers; Because, we're both getting too old For the shallow, childish games That we once desired and played. Life has never been a paradise-- Nor was it ever meant to be hell; But, we're both still alive-- Even when my dog-eared pages Are all but filled with the dead. The dousing sight of an old man Was quite a horrific reckoning-- Especially for itsy-bitsy me, Who merely sprung out of bed, Because of a startling skirmish, As loud as an ornery deadhead! Still half asleep and giddy-- Heart, thumping like a grating drill-- I opened my billowing curtains To check this noisy existence; Then, lo and behold! A ludicrous creature yelled at me; A being, dripping and so filthy, Stared right back at me-- As if daring me to cackle At his wrought up ensemble of twigs! It took me a few moments to discern That the lunatic monster, Flapping his limbs, was my neighbor-- The one who seemed too urbane To even try such a risible caper! There he went, hopping about, As if the whole wide world wasn't there-- Terrorizing young, innocent minds And gripping the tongues of busybodies Who were too scandalized to act! For, how does one siphon a valid riposte When one finds a sophisticated old man Gambolling about the ricefields, Turned into mucky rivulets, In front of one's house? One just stupidly gapes, that is!
