The dark clouds as they over the sky, loom And slowly spread their dusky pallor of gloom The fire like hope burnt low in the hearth They waited inside with bated breath. The dark night hid the flicker of hope for all Each ear strained for a horsehoof or a footfall. For between life and death stood this one night If it meant death they wouldn't give in without a fight. The doe eyed red lipped, lithe maiden fair Hidden in the darkest corner in the room there Knew for her best it was she alone Would spare the rest their lives, if she was gone She loved a man handsome gallant and brave An act that now will take them all to their grave She was promised to a dolt mean and old He staked his claim when of her love was told. Tomorrow would be the day, he would take her away They sat waiting to see what fate had in their way. Just close to daybreak there was a stir Gallops that rode fast that slowly came near.
