Japan gov't mulls raising tax-free income threshold from January 2026 The government and the ruling parties are considering applying a higher income tax exemption threshold from January 2026, in a move to incentivize part-timers to work longer hours amid Japan's labor shortage, a source close to the matter said Tuesday. The schedule is expected if the government decides on raising the threshold for imposing income tax, currently set at a minimum annual income of 1.03 million, in its tax reform plan for the next fiscal year starting April. Related bills will be subsequently deliberated in the Diet for likely enactment around the spring. The ruling Liberal Democratic Party and its coalition partner the Komeito party, which lost their majority in the powerful House of Representatives in October's general election, have agreed to accept a request from a minor opposition party, the Democratic Party for the People, to increase the nontaxable income threshold. ©SHIRSENDU KARMAKAR #Japan

Japan strongly condemns Iranian attack on Israel Japan strongly condemned a retaliatory attack by Iran on Israel, calling it an escalation of events and saying it was deeply concerned at the situation, in a statement released by Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa on Sunday. "This attack is one that further worsens the current Middle East situation. We are deeply concerned and strongly condemn this sort of escalation," the statement said. Iran launched explosive drones and fired missiles at Israel late on Saturday in its first direct attack on Israeli territory, a retaliatory strike for an attack on its embassy in Syria that it blamed on Israel that raised the threat of a wider regional conflict. ©SHIRSENDU KARMAKAR #Japan

Japan's population falls below 125 mil; down for 13th straight year Japan's population fell by 595,000 from a year earlier to total 124,352,000 as of Oct 1, marking the 13th consecutive year of decline, with household size also continuing to shrink, national data showed Friday. The population of Japanese nationals fell by 837,000 to 121,193,000, marking the largest drop since comparable data became available in 1950, according to a demographic survey by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, despite government efforts to grapple with the country's declining birthrate and rapidly aging society. In an estimate released by a national population institute the same day, single-person households were forecast to account for 44.3 percent of the 52.61 million households in Japan in 2050, with nearly half of them made up of people aged 65 or older. ©SHIRSENDU KARMAKAR #Japan

Russia warns Japan of 'serious consequences' if Patriot missiles made there end up in Ukraine Russia's newly appointed ambassador to Japan has warned Tokyo of serious consequences and retaliatory steps if Patriot missile systems manufactured under U.S. license in Japan end up in Ukraine, the RIA news agency reported on Friday. RIA cited the new envoy, Nikolai Nozdrev, as saying that Moscow would be watching closely to see where Japanese arms exports ended up after Tokyo softened its export rules at the end of last year. In particular, he said, Russia would be watching to see if and when any Patriot missile complexes and missiles made in Japan under U.S. license are exported to the United States and then to Ukraine. ©SHIRSENDU KARMAKAR #Russia #Japan #Patriot

Japan becomes 5th country to land spacecraft on moon Japan became the fifth country in history to reach the moon when one of its spacecraft successfully made a soft landing on the lunar surface early Saturday. However, space officials said they need more time to analyze whether the Smart Lander for Investigating Moon, or SLIM, achieved its mission priority of making a pinpoint landing. They also said the craft's solar panel had failed to generate power, which could shorten its activity on the moon. Space officials believe the SLIM's small rovers were launched as planned and that data was being transmitted back to Earth, said Hitoshi Kuninaka, head of the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, a unit of Japan's space agency. But he said that SLIM's solar battery wasn't generating power and that it had only a few more hours of battery life. He said that the priority now was for the craft to gather as much data about its landing and the moon as possible on the remaining battery. Japan follows the United States, the Soviet Union, China and India in reaching the moon. ©SHIRSENDU KARMAKAR #Japan #Spacecraft #Land_On_Moon

Japan earthquake casts cloud over push to restart nuclear plants The powerful earthquake that hit Japan's western coast on New Year's Day has underscored the country's exposure to natural disasters, casting fresh doubt over a push to bring its nuclear capacity back online. Nuclear power plants dot the coast of mountainous Japan, which is prone to earthquakes and tsunamis due to its location on the seismically active "Ring of Fire" around the Pacific Ocean. Monday's magnitude 7.6 earthquake, which has killed more than 100 people in the Hokuriku region, destroyed infrastructure and left homes without power, struck days after regulators lifted an operational ban on Tokyo Electric's Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant. ©SHIRSENDU KARMAKAR #Japan #Earthquake
